Missouri study seeks input to define school board president leadership

MSBA’s leadership team asked board members, presidents and superintendents to complete a 360-style survey to build a statewide framework for board president leadership and training.
Katherine Hairston of MSBA’s leadership development team asked Ste. Genevieve R-II board members and superintendents to participate in a statewide research survey designed to define the leadership role of board presidents.
"The survey is trying to figure out what should board leadership look like," Hairston said, describing a proposed 360 evaluation that would gather self-assessments from board presidents, feedback from fellow board members and input from superintendents.
Why it matters: The MSBA project aims to produce a training framework for board presidents, whom the presenters described as shouldering significant responsibility for guiding governance and partnering with superintendents. Hairston said the study is intended to make that role clearer and to build resources for training and support.
Hairston asked for broad participation from presidents, board members and superintendents to ensure multiple perspectives are included in the final framework. The presentation noted the resulting materials could help governing teams appoint and support board presidents and potentially serve as a model for other states.
The board did not adopt policy at the meeting; the session was a request for participation in MSBA’s study.
