Summary
City staff announced daytime closures for University Boulevard East during spring break to complete utility crossings; the meeting approved a neighborhood entry permit, a $75,000 traffic-signal rehabilitation contract, a $28,750 demolition contract, and a Spectrum route-of-entry for fiber work to an FAA-leased building.
At a Tuscaloosa City meeting, staff said University Boulevard East will be closed during daytime hours for the week of spring break (March 14–20) so crews can complete utility crossings more efficiently. "Anybody who needs access to the within the project footprint, residents, businesses, etcetera, access will be available throughout the entire time," Bill (S2) said; staff plans to notify the public through tuscaloosaroads.com, text messages and written notices to nearby properties.
The meeting then considered and approved a series of routine permits and small public-works contracts. Mike (S5) described a right-of-way use permit request from the Lexington Downs neighborhood to install entrance columns, landscaping and irrigation in the Bluegrass Parkway right-of-way; the permit establishes maintenance responsibility for the neighborhood, and the permit was approved by voice vote.
Mike also presented a recommendation to award a minor public-works contract with Premier Service to rehabilitate a deteriorating traffic signal at the intersection near DCH on Hillard Drive with a not-to-exceed amount of $75,000. The project will replace conduit, wiring, signal heads and pedestrian controllers; Mike said funding will come from the city's general fund reserve. The chair called for the motion and the contract was approved by voice vote.
The meeting approved a $28,750 contract with Civil Works Construction to demolish remaining foundation elements at the Bowery site; staff said two quotes were received and the requested amount was the lower bid and that funding will come from the Bowery tank demo capital account. Finally, Jeff (S7) presented a request by Spectrum Business (Charter) for a route of entry to a building the city leases to the FAA to replace existing copper lines with fiber; the route-of-entry request was approved by voice vote.
All of the routine items passed by voice vote; the meeting adjourned afterward.
