Andrews said the state page offers marketing tools and the county could be listed as a partner if council chose to sign up.
Council members raised reservations about some national sponsors and whether the initiative’s leadership represented county values, and emphasized the need to center tribal engagement and local charter values. Paulson said he had reservations about formal alignment and about whether tribal recognition claims are genuine. Fuller and other members favored a county‑crafted proclamation that would allow San Juan County to define its own framing of the 250th anniversary and highlight diversity and equity.
Council directed staff to draft a proclamation tied to local values and to consider modest civic‑engagement programming (for example, a civic day) that would be cost‑effective and aligned with county priorities. Council declined to become a state partner or to form a county‑run planning committee at this time.
Staff said the county fair board has already selected a 2026 fair theme and that the fair’s poster art contest is underway; they recommended that the proclamation and any civic programming be low‑cost and locally focused.
