Board considers changes to student representative selection but delays policy change

Board member Haley and others said campus selection could reduce the board's role in cutting candidates and relieve the chair from uncomfortable choices. "I think that's a great idea to let the campuses select their representatives," Haley said, while also noting the board should define what it expects from student reps before changing the process.
Vice President Miller and other board members pushed back on removing the board's vetting role entirely. Miller said she strongly supports keeping student voice and was cautious about removing a process that had been unanimously approved by the board two years earlier. "I feel really strongly about the policy that we have in place," Miller said, urging that any changes preserve opportunities for a broad range of students rather than only high-profile candidates.
Members raised equity and consistency concerns: some buildings have used student council to populate reps, others rely on principal selection, and some applicants appeared to have direct access to board members. Board members also noted inconsistency in how the selection policy was implemented over two years — for example, whether prior reps were automatically renewed and whether panel interviews actually took place as intended.
Several members proposed intermediate steps: seek feedback from current student representatives, adhere to the existing policy's intended panel interviews before revising it, and consider modest revisions that would require campuses to provide a representative pool while preserving a board confirmation or panel review. Board member Dawson suggested adding guidelines to ensure diversity among nominees so campuses do not consistently send the same student types.
The board did not approve any policy changes at the meeting. The chair said the item would be discussed further with a smaller group and with feedback from student representatives before any changes are proposed.
