Matthew Schick sworn in as Martinez Unified student board member; board grants limited voting privileges

The Martinez Unified Board of Education on Aug. 18 adopted Resolution 2026-01 authorizing the 2025–26 student board member, Matthew Schick of Alhambra High School, to make motions and vote on matters before the board except on employer–employee relations and closed-session items.

The resolution was introduced by the trustee president and a board member moved to approve it; the motion was seconded and the board voted to adopt the resolution. Following the vote, the student representative was administered the oath of office and posed for photos with the board.

Matthew Schick, the newly sworn student board representative, also delivered a report on recent start-of-year activities across district campuses, noting the addition of TK classes at several elementary schools, upcoming picture days and site council meetings, and planned after-school enrichment programs. "I'm so excited to be serving as this year's school board representative," Schick said, thanking peers, an outgoing student representative and family for their support.

The resolution specifies the board's limitation on student voting: Schick may make motions and participate in votes except on matters dealing with employer–employee relations and items discussed in closed session. The board provided no additional amendments to alter those exceptions during the meeting.

The board took the action as part of a short agenda that included routine items and remarks welcoming the student representative; the meeting adjourned at 7:00 p.m.
