Glenwood wins Nebraska Broadband Bridge grant to bring fiber to 53 York County sites

Glenwood representatives told the York County Board of Commissioners that the company was awarded a Nebraska Broadband Bridge Grant on Jan. 9 to bring fiber-to-the-premises service to 53 rural locations in the county.

At the county meeting Allison Fritchie, a Glenwood representative, said the awarded project covers 53 locations and that the company has 18 months from the award date to complete construction. Why it matters: county officials said the grant will deliver high-speed, future-proof broadband to previously unserved addresses and that local matching funds could be a candidate use for remaining ARPA dollars. A county commissioner noted the county’s awarded portion of the project was roughly $639,000 for this project and asked about scale compared with other Glenwood awards across the state.

What Glenwood said: company speakers said the network design is already complete, contractors will be solicited to perform construction, and Glenwood will maintain the infrastructure once deployed. Glenwood indicated it succeeded in five separate state grant applications and is coordinating marketing and resident outreach; the company also said some runs will be direct-bury fiber and that they prefer burial in rural Nebraska because aerial lines face higher wind damage risk.

Timeline and next steps: Glenwood will notify the 53 addresses individually, share construction and service details, and return to county officials with progress updates. County officials discussed possible use of ARPA funds as local match and invited Glenwood back for future planning or public ceremonies to mark the project start.

The board took no formal vote on the presentation; Glenwood said it will follow up with the county and residents as work proceeds.
