Parks staff says summer programs succeeded; department bought 10 new picnic tables

Scott (parks staff) told the Parks & Recreation Committee that the department’s six-week summer program concluded last Friday with strong turnout at five locations and positive feedback from participants.

He said the department’s top priority over the past six to seven weeks was prepping and maintaining fields to support all-star baseball and softball. "We did purchase 10, new picnic tables," Scott said, and staff are assessing older tables to repair those worth saving and replace those beyond repair.

The report covered routine maintenance work across multiple parks, including paint and bleacher repairs at Mandeville and Alvin, and a grant awarded to repair the infield at Danville. Scott said the Danville infield is scheduled for reconstruction and therefore is currently not in regular use.

Committee members asked whether program sites such as Fairlawn or Salesville should be reinstated next year. Scott said Fairlawn showed higher participation historically and that Salesville’s ongoing construction and lack of utilities at that site make it less suitable until the project is complete. The committee agreed to revisit site choices after construction finishes.

Members pressed on typical maintenance items — irrigation timing, grass height, and stump-filling — after several speakers noted outfields being cut very short in hot weather. Scott said he would change irrigation schedules (proposed start around 4:00 a.m.) and follow up on stump repair and blade adjustments with grounds crews.

The committee also heard that several ongoing recreation programs (chess, youth lacrosse, tennis, cross-country and adult yoga) will continue into the fall. The department plans to prioritize field reseeding and rest once middle school construction completes and space becomes available.

The meeting approved the minutes and proceeded to other agenda items; no formal policy or budget change was adopted during Scott’s report.
