Mahomet-Seymour board hears staffing requests for multilingual learners and social work support

An administrator said current MLL staff — named in the transcript as Jackie Risley and Demeris Zaya, with Tracy Beecher also providing support — were managing about 118 MLL students across more than 21 languages and that adding staff would reduce the burden on auxiliary services and improve instructional time.
The board also heard a proposal to fund a $25,000 social-work intern districtwide, a position intended to transition to a full-time junior-high social worker by the next year if staffing and budgets allow. Trustees asked for follow-up details and said they expected the formal staffing requests to appear on the March consent or action agenda.
Separately, administrators proposed adding a section of a vocational, dual-credit medical careers course through Parkland College. The course currently has 51 students; adding a section would cost the district $15,250 if a vocational grant cannot cover the expense, or alternatively the district could charge students $300 each. Trustees indicated support for the district covering that cost for juniors and seniors.
