Mark Thier, president of International Association of Firefighters Local 2487, told the Truckee Meadows board on March 3 that the union values cooperative relations with county leadership, celebrated the completion of the latest probationary firefighters and promoted an upcoming charity golf tournament.
"For the record, Mark Thier, president, 2487," he said, and described the 14th annual Guns N' Hoses golf tournament in April as a long-running partnership between Truckee Meadows firefighters and Washoe County deputies that benefits the Northern Nevada Children's Cancer Foundation. Thier did not provide a lifetime fundraising total but said proceeds over prior years have been significant.
Thier also noted pride in the most recent cohort of probationary firefighters making it through the academy; when asked about academy length he said the program is "actually 16 weeks" with additional time before members hit the line. The president invited commissioners and community members to support the tournament and praised the department's probationary training pipeline as "the future of our department."
