The Brockton School Committee voted to adopt the superintendent’s original 2026–27 district calendar, setting the first day of school for Sept. 3, 2026.
During discussion, the superintendent (Speaker 3) explained the district had two calendar options — a Sept. 3 start and a later Sept. 8 start — and described how this year’s high number of snow days could push the school year into late June. The superintendent said the district will meet with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to discuss whether a waiver of the 180‑day requirement will be needed.
Committee member (Speaker 5) moved to adopt the originally presented calendar (Sept. 3). The motion was seconded and approved by roll call; Chair (Speaker 1) closed the matter by saying, “So September 3 it is.”
Why it matters: a Sept. 3 start preserves more instructional days before summer and reduces the likelihood of extending the school year into late June; the superintendent said staff will return with a revised calendar if DESE requires a waiver or other modifications.
What’s next: the superintendent will follow up with DESE and bring back any revised calendar for committee consideration if a waiver or additional changes are necessary.
