Parks and Recreation Commission delays officer elections as director outlines spring programs and field work

The department emphasized gym-floor protections: staff supervise programs and restrict food and hot drinks to protect new surfaces.
Sullivan Field work, awarded to Sports Turf Specialties at a previous meeting, was discussed as still scheduled for spring following delays related to gym construction. Staff do not expect the turf work to disrupt games or practices because contractors plan to work early in the day and finish during school hours. The Director said the department will confirm exact dates once the contractor provides them.
The Director noted there is no change yet on the Mandel grant; notifications typically arrive in April and the department will report back when there is an update. Commissioners raised localized maintenance items — fencing between a parking lot and a field, and tidying a dirt lot at Arnold after snow melt — and discussed spectator seating limitations at Lonsdale Gym, which is used primarily for practices while larger middle-school facilities host most games.
The commission addressed safety equipment: the Chair observed AED cabinets at some parks while the Director said AED units had been removed months earlier, prompting staff to review current AED placements and where a mounting structure or power would be needed.
Procedurally, a committee member moved to postpone the election of commission officers until next month so more members can attend; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. The meeting concluded after a motion to adjourn.
