Broussard council awards $907,000 contract to Southern Coatings for two water-tower rehabs

The Broussard City Council on Sept. 10 approved Resolution 806-24 to award the contract for rehabilitation and repainting of the Main Street and Highway 90 elevated water towers to Southern Coatings, the low bidder at $907,000.

Daniel Hutchinson of Como Engineering told the council that bids opened Aug. 22 produced seven bids and that Southern Coatings’ price was approximately $500,000 under the project budget. “We opened bids on August 22 for the Main Street and Highway 90 tower rehabs…there were seven bidders. We recommend that we award the job to Southern Coatings, which came in as low bid at 907,000,” Hutchinson said.

The project will repair and repaint the tanks “inside out,” Hutchinson said, and will be executed one tower at a time so one tank remains operational while the other is worked on. Hutchinson described the final color as an off-white “tank white” and said a basic rendering with three colors had been provided to bidders; council members asked whether the municipal logo would be included. Hutchinson said the bid included the supplied level of design and that the city could negotiate appearance details with the contractor.

City staff said funding for the project had already been approved; awarding the low bid leaves a substantial budget surplus for the city. Council members moved, seconded and approved the resolution by roll call.

The contractor will proceed with the phased work and the city will coordinate timing to keep one tower in service while the other is rehabilitated.
