Council names new Station 5 training room the Chief John Childs Training Center

Sterling Heights City Council voted to name the training room at Fire Station No. 5 for former Fire Chief John Childs in recognition of his decades of service; council discussed signage and whether a future building naming might be appropriate.
Fire Chief Kevin Edmond presented a resolution asking the council to honor former Chief John Childs by naming the new training room at Fire Station No. 5 in his memory.
“As the current fire chief, it gives me great pleasure to recognize leaders that had a lasting impact on our organization,” Chief Kevin Edmond said, recounting John Childs’ career, training contributions and regional leadership.
Council members praised Chief Childs’ leadership and training emphasis; some said the recognition was fitting while a few council members asked staff to consider whether renaming an entire fire station would be appropriate in the future. Councilmember comments emphasized the short notice of the naming proposal but supported the motion to proceed with naming the Station 5 training room and requested prominent signage on Ryan Road identifying the training center.
A motion to name the training room at Fire Station No. 5 the Chief John Childs Training Center was moved, supported and passed by voice vote. Council directed staff to include appropriate signage as part of the station reconstruction and to bring forward any additional naming considerations if members wish to pursue them later.
The council also invited Chief Childs’ family and department members for a photo and public recognition at the meeting.
