Landowners ask Wayne County to close Hazel Lane, citing high speeds and dust

At the March 2 meeting, Trey Oates said landowners on both sides of Hazel Lane want the county to close the short dirt spur to reduce speeding, dust and damage to adjacent property. "They're running 60 mile an hour when they hit that road and it causes dust everywhere," Oates told the commission, adding that log trucks and other traffic were degrading nearby county property and ruts were damaging his mower.
Oates described the closure as a modest detour for drivers — Hazel Lane is about two‑tenths of a mile long and detouring via a paved route would add only a few tenths of a mile for local traffic — and said landowners would be willing to maintain certain segments, culverts or ramps if the county closed the road.
County staff told the board that the legal process for closing a county road requires advertising and a public hearing. The clerk and staff said they would advertise the proposal and hold the required hearings to allow affected neighbors and other stakeholders to comment before the board takes any formal action.
The commission did not vote on closing the roadway at the meeting; staff instructed the applicant to wait for the advertised hearing and to bring any engineering details or proposed maintenance agreements for review.
