The Paris City Council on May 11 approved an ordinance extending the mayor's local disaster declaration for public‑health emergency purposes and rolling back an earlier expansion of the youth curfew to its pre‑COVID hours.
Miss Harris, speaking for staff, said the primary reason for the extension is to remain eligible for potential state and federal reimbursements and aid. "In order to be eligible for certain reimbursements, and aid from the state and federal government, you have to have an emergency declaration in place," she said. The ordinance would extend the local declaration another 30 days and return the youth curfew to its previous schedule.
Council members discussed limits on local authority after statewide orders from the governor and noted that more restrictive local orders would likely be preempted; they nonetheless agreed to keep the local declaration in place for funding and administrative purposes. The council approved the extension as written.
