Directors report: waterline nearing completion, 911 calls surge and recycling milestones reported

During the March 2 Pickens County meeting, department directors gave status updates on public works, utilities, public safety and recycling projects.
Miranda McDowell (internal operations) said the Henderson Mountain Road waterline is roughly 82% complete and expected to be finished in March. She also noted the county's finance office received a GFOA award and that HR processed nine hires and seven separations in February; payroll staff are preparing for FLSA overtime compliance training in March.
Director Ron (public safety) reported a sharp rise in 911 call volume, saying dispatch reported an 80% increase from 2024 to 2025. He also noted recent CAD mapping updates, training hours delivered through EMA, and that fire and EMS responded to a large number of calls in 2025 (figures read aloud in the meeting). Ron said a new brush truck has been delivered to Monument Road station and that a new fire station build‑out is projected to be complete in early June.
Planning/external operations staff highlighted recycling and solid‑waste activity: multiple recent grants (a generator grant, a tire‑amnesty grant and a mobile recycling trailer grant), a tire amnesty that collected more than 800 tires, nearly 2,000,000 pounds shipped for recycling last year and 100,000 pounds of glass recycled. Airport infrastructure work continues with a perimeter‑fence phase 2 bid opening March 31 and a terminal apron rehabilitation bid opening April 7.
Directors said more detailed project schedules and presentations will appear at upcoming regular meetings.
