"It was stated that the City of Benton Harbor will not have enough funds to pay its bill for the month of March," Mayor Pro Tem Shaquille Turner said, asking officials to state publicly whether staff and bills would be paid. The mayor and city manager responded that a $420,000 transfer would allow the city to pay both salaries and other bills. "The mayor is exactly correct. We will be able to do both," the city manager said.
A motion to approve the accounts-payable listing was made by Commissioner Isom and supported by Commissioner Henderson; the commission recorded a roll-call vote and the motion carried.
What happens next: staff will process the payments as authorized; commissioners asked staff to clarify how payroll and stipends will be handled if funding constraints arise.
