Sheriff reports drop in county DUIs and drug cases, outlines patrol staffing changes

The county sheriff briefed Fountain Green City Council on public-safety statistics and staffing on Feb. 19, reporting trends the sheriff described as encouraging.
The sheriff said dispatch handled about 22,094 PSAP calls countywide last year, of which roughly 19,966 were law enforcement calls. He reported that DUI arrests fell from 53 in 2024 to 37 in 2025 and that drug cases dropped from 87 in 2024 to 64 in 2025. The sheriff attributed part of the improvement to increased traffic enforcement and county programs including an RSAT residential substance abuse treatment program and probation-linked community health work that have helped reduce recidivism.
As part of staffing changes, the sheriff said one detective position was reallocated to patrol and that additional patrol FTEs were added; the office also plans to maintain regular quarterly engagement with local officials, including sharing local patrol statistics. The sheriff invited mayoral and council participation in the county's local emergency planning committee and said the county aims to sustain proactive coverage in small towns while rotating patrol presence to avoid predictability.
Council members praised the trend lines and requested a Fountain Green'specific stat sheet for local patrol hours and stops; the sheriff agreed to provide a monthly report focused on Fountain Green.
