Extension reports growth in 4‑H and plans robotics events; asks for fairgrounds access

Aaron Hershey, Weston County extension 4‑H educator, told commissioners the local 4‑H program has 173 youth enrolled across 50 project areas and 31 volunteers this year. Hershey described an expansion of ag‑robotics programming tied to Texas educators and said the county will host a Northeast Robotics event on May 30 in Newcastle.
"We're bringing in Texas 4‑H volunteers and educators to do robotics trainings," Hershey said, noting plans for robotics showcases at county events and contests that can generate scholarships and broader opportunities for youth.
Hershey asked commissioners to consider fairgrounds scheduling and space allocation for 4‑H programming — specifically seeking access to buildings such as the old open‑class building for regular robotics practice so 4‑H teams would not have to set up and tear down equipment after each use. He volunteered to be part of any task force the board forms to address fairgrounds operations and scheduling.
Commissioners thanked Hershey for the update and agreed that youth programming should be considered in fairgrounds planning and budget discussions.
