The Livonia City Council approved a contract to construct a scenario-based police training structure at the Glendale Training Center, accepting the low bid from Bonjoro Construction.
The police chief described the facility as a realistic scenario-training structure that will support training for domestic incidents, mental-health crises and active-shooter scenarios and said the project will be paid from adjudicated forfeiture funds with planned reimbursement from the city's insurance provider.
"This project's been in the making for several years," the police chief said, adding the center will accommodate realistic scenario training and regional partners. He noted the department intends to bring in its social worker for mental-health training and to open the facility to federal, state and local agencies.
Council members praised the project as a regional training asset. Councilman Donovic emphasized the importance of realistic, tactical and mental-health-focused training; Range Master Anthony Hall and other staff were recognized for developing the project.
The motion to accept the low bid and award the contract carried unanimously (7-0).
What's next: Staff will work with Bonjoro Construction to finalize timelines; the project will be funded through adjudicated forfeiture funds with the department pursuing reimbursement through insurance and grant avenues.
