Stop-sign request near Lake Hills Elementary denied after engineer and police find no warrant

Noemi Andrade told the Michigan City Board of Public Works and Safety she was requesting a stop sign at the corner of Hendricks Street and Francis Street because her son and other children are let off nearby and she fears vehicles "zooming through that street." "I am requesting a stop sign at the corner of my residence… because my son gets dropped off and other kids as well," Andrade said.
Police and transportation staff reviewed the intersection: Captain Jesse reported 11 calls for service since 2020, eight traffic stops, two suspicious vehicles and two accidents nearby; Tim Warner, the city engineer, said recent restriping, a newly painted stop bar and a crosswalk reduced risk and that there did not appear to be a traffic warrant supporting installation of a permanent stop sign. "I don't recommend it," Warner said.
After public comment both for and against the request, including an objection noting the board had denied the same request previously, the board voted to deny the stop-sign installation (motion passed by voice vote). Members encouraged vigilance by bus drivers and neighbors and suggested continued monitoring and engineering study if crash or complaint patterns change.
The board's decision leaves the existing temporary bus stop protections in place but asks city staff and the police department to continue to monitor the location and report further data if conditions worsen.
