Uvalde CISD board votes to offer interim superintendent post pending background check

The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees voted after closed-session interviews to offer the interim superintendent position to a finalist, pending a background check and final contract negotiations.

Trustee JJ Suarez moved "to approve offering the interim superintendent position to doctor Juan Anahosa pending a background check and final contract negotiations," and the motion was seconded and approved by the board. Board President Perez later announced the motion carried.

Why it matters: The board’s selection fills an immediate leadership role while the district conducts a broader superintendent search. Public comment earlier in the meeting included testimony supporting a candidate identified in the record as Juan Hinojosa; the meeting transcript contains inconsistent spellings of the candidate’s last name (Hinojosa and Anahosa), which the board cited when making the motion.

Superintendent Colas and multiple trustees thanked the finalists for applying and encouraged them to consider other openings within the district if they were not selected for the interim role. The offer is expressly contingent on completion of a background check and successful contract negotiations before the appointment becomes final.

The board took the vote after a closed session held under Texas Government Code chapter 551 to conduct interviews and consult with counsel about employment matters. Trustees who spoke following the vote expressed appreciation for the candidates’ qualifications and urged them to remain engaged with the district.

The board adjourned at 10:04 p.m. The district did not announce a start date; the appointment remains pending the background check and contract agreement.
