The Newport City Council approved multiple licenses and permits aimed at balancing business activity and residential quality of life.
The council approved the Broadway Street Fair event (Oct. 10, 2026), including street closures and traffic-routing arrangements for emergency access. The council also approved an annual entertainment license for the Newport Protective Club after the owner clarified live music hours and neighbors requested live music end earlier; the council conditioned the license accordingly. Fastnet Pub’s request for a class B outdoor expansion was approved after owner Finbar Murray reported he and neighbors had negotiated an agreement: the patio will be limited to three televisions using the built-in TV speakers (no amplified speakers) and hours were limited to reduce late-night disturbance. Neighbors and councilors praised the voluntary compromise.
Councilors asked staff to include enforcement-friendly conditions in licensing language, and several motions to close hearings and approve with conditions passed by voice vote. Council emphasized that licenses can be revisited at renewal if neighborhood impacts emerge.
