Council appoints Mariana Gutierrez to fill District 3 vacancy

The Provencourt City Council on Jan. 20 appointed Mariana Gutierrez to fill the District 3 vacancy created by the resignation of Council Member Davies. The council conducted a roll-call vote and the clerk announced a 4-0 vote in favor of Gutierrez’s appointment.
Gutierrez, a District 3 resident and registered voter who has previously worked for the city and served as city treasurer, told the council she chose Tehachapi as “our home” and emphasized responsibility, transparency and protecting the town’s character if appointed. “I come in ready to serve and ready to live,” Gutierrez said during her remarks.
Councilmembers opened nominations and multiple members nominated Gutierrez before the clerk closed nominations. After the vote, the clerk administered the oath of office; Gutierrez recited the oath affirming support for the U.S. and California constitutions and the council posed for a photograph.
The appointment is temporary: the council and clerk noted the appointee will serve only until certification of the November election, when the seat will be filled by an elected candidate. No additional conditions or amendments to the appointment were recorded at the meeting.
The council welcomed Gutierrez and members exchanged congratulations. The council did not take other formal action on the District 3 seat during this meeting.
