Freeport council adopts code-enforcement amendment and rezoning for 'Grow With Us' daycare

On Sept. 25 the City of Freeport City Council completed second readings and adopted two planning ordinances.
Planning staff presented an amendment to Article 2 of the Land Development Code that clarifies authority, makes code enforcement complaint-driven (not proactive), and establishes special magistrate procedures; the council held the second reading and adopted the ordinance identified in discussion as ordinance 25-07. Planning staff said they will return to the council in December with additional ordinances and related code-enforcement details.
The council also held second reading and adopted a rezoning ordinance for the Grow With Us Daycare Center, changing roughly 5.58 acres from high-density residential to residential-commercial to allow the proposed daycare’s development; staff said there is already strong community interest and a likely waitlist for the childcare facility.
Both measures passed on voice votes. The planning director noted additional ordinance work is in progress and that updated parcel numbers had been corrected prior to re-holding the rezoning reading.
