Ocean View outlines TK expansion and enrollment plans as state moves toward UPK

Curriculum specialist Lori Manns and Transitional Kindergarten teachers presented an update on early-learning changes and Ocean View—View's TK program at the Jan. 14 board meeting.
Manns said the state's Universal Pre-K (UPK) approach will expand access so that by the 2025-26 school year all 4-year-olds born on or before Sept. 1, 2025, will be eligible for TK. The district expects to serve about 400 TK students next year and noted adoption of the Preschool Transitional Kindergarten Learning Foundations (PTKLF) in July, updated training for TK teachers, and a forthcoming adult-to-student ratio change (a 1:10 ratio scheduled to begin in 2025-26).
Panelists described program supports: a TK leadership team, an observational tool for teachers, family-communication letters, and professional development focused on play-based learning, handwriting supports and behavioral strategies. The presenters invited families to informational nights (dates announced for kindergarten, middle school and TK nights) and encouraged enrollment beginning Jan. 24.
What happens next: The district will continue TK outreach, finalize staffing and training aligned to PTKLF guidance and host the announced information nights to aid family enrollment.
