The Skagway Municipality Finance Committee voted to award a $25,000 community funding grant to the Northwards Writers Symposium after reviewing written correspondence from applicant Jeff Brady.
Brady explained that keynote fees and booking agency costs "shot up" after the pandemic and that the budget line listed for "keynote travel" is largely used for keynote fees and deposits. He said agencies typically require a 50% deposit to secure a keynote and that travel costs are billed later. Brady said the event had adjusted its planned keynote budget downward this year and that earlier years' cancellations and virtual events complicated reserve balances.
Assembly member Deb Hanson said Brady’s written responses addressed the committee’s questions and moved to award the $25,000 grant. The motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
Later in the public comment portion, Greg Hayes, chair of the Eagles’ kitchen committee, asked about future city funding opportunities; Hayes said the committee has raised more than $90,000 toward kitchen construction and intends to apply for city funds to supplement the project.
The committee did not attach additional conditions to the award at the meeting; final administration of the grant will follow municipal grant policy and clerk’s office procedures.
