The Skagway Municipality Finance Committee voted to recommend to the assembly conceptual approval of the Ports & Harbors-recommended dredging approach: Alternative 2 for the Ore Basin (dredge to minus 42 feet plus a two-foot overdredge) and Alternative 2 at the ferry dock.
Hansen summarized Ports & Harbors' rationale: the Army Corps recommended Alternative 2 and it carried a far shorter estimated construction time (roughly 141 working days) compared with Alternative 3 (about 254 working days), which improves the feasibility of completing the work within the three-year permit window after sediment characterization is finished. Hansen said Ports & Harbors favored Alternative 2 on grounds of practicality, cost and mobilization efficiency.
Manager Emily Deetsch told the committee approval would be conceptual only and that specific cost estimates are not budgeted this year: permitting and design depend on the path the assembly selects. Deetsch said staff has met with Alaska Marine Highway System representatives and discussed coordinating dredging with American Cruise Lines to lower costs or timing conflicts.
Next steps: The committee recommended the conceptual dredging plan to the assembly for further permitting, design and budgeting decisions.
