Finance committee approves $12,000 grant for Maiden Skagway marketing program

The Skagway Municipality Finance Committee approved a $12,000 community funding grant to the Skagway Development Corporation on Wednesday to support the Maiden Skagway marketing program.
Eliza Russell, executive director of the Skagway Development Corporation, told the committee the program provides low-cost marketing support for local creators and artists and has recently placed promotions on cruise ships and in the airport. Russell said she had planned to use the SDC grant as matching funds for a larger federal grant that is delayed this year.
Committee members confirmed the request met program guidelines and noted the community funding budget has roughly $101,516 available after prior awards; the packet showed about $326,000 had been available for community grants before this request. Assembly member Burnham moved to approve the grant and Assembly member Henry seconded; the committee voted aye and the grant was approved within the committee's authority.
The grant was processed as a standard community funding award; Russell also invited members to an SDC small-business mixer the evening before the assembly meeting.
The committee’s action was limited to approving the community funding request; implementation and any reporting requirements will follow the municipality’s community funding procedures.
