Public Works committee backs Main Street Concept 5, flags cost difference

The Skagway Public Works Committee voted on Nov. 18 to recommend Concept 5 of the Main Street project to the Assembly, citing improved walkability and public preference for wider sidewalks.
Resident commenter Caitlin Jared told the committee she "leans more towards... concept 5" because it provides wider sidewalks that better accommodate families, children on bikes and residents with visual impairments. Committee members echoed that sentiment: one member said the larger sidewalks make a noticeable difference when walking and that Concept 5 combines features favored by the public.
Deputy Manager Rebecca Kamaka provided budget figures for the two leading concepts and said the primary cost difference is the wider sidewalk in Concept 5: "4 b is 33,400,000.0, and 5 is 36,400,000.0," she said. Committee members discussed the tradeoff between cost and long‑term community benefit and moved to recommend Concept 5 to the Assembly. The motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
The committee asked staff to carry the recommendation to the Assembly and to provide additional materials as requested; further design and budget work will continue through regular Assembly procedures.
