Manager Deach said the work—installing domestic water lines and a dry fire-protection system on the ore dock—is required for fire-marshal approval and replaces a temporary suppression method currently used on-site. "This ... installs the domestic water and dry fire protection on the dock," Manager Deach said, describing the permanent suppression system and its purpose.
Committee members asked whether the new system would lower insurance premiums or enable billing ships for water service; Manager Deach said staff would investigate insurance implications and that metered ship hookups were not included in the present RFB scope. He noted the project had been preliminarily budgeted at $250,000 but the low bid of $548,934 exceeds that estimate; the port bond balance of about $1.2 million could be used because the work relates to the ore-dock redevelopment.
Member Potter moved and Alex Waddell seconded forwarding the $548,934 award recommendation to the assembly; the committee approved the motion by voice vote.
Next steps: staff will include the recommended award on the assembly agenda and confirm any follow-up design or metering work needed to enable water sales to visiting vessels.
