The Skagway Finance Committee on Jan. 15 voted to recommend that the Municipal Assembly renew the town's lobbying contract with Mr. Walsh at the same annual rate long used in the budget.
The committee chair said Mr. Walsh has been paid about $47,500 annually in recent years and praised his responsiveness, adding that the arrangement is already budgeted. “I’ve had great interactions with John. I think we get really good service from him,” the chair said.
Alex moved to recommend renewing the contract and Potter seconded the motion. The committee voted unanimously to forward the recommendation to the full assembly. Manager Deitch said Mr. Walsh will be on the phone at the subsequent assembly meeting to answer members' questions, though he will not provide an extended presentation unless called on.
The recommendation is advisory: the assembly will take the final vote to authorize the renewal and confirm the budget appropriation. The finance committee did not alter the rate and indicated the cost is already included in the assembly budget.
