Civic Affairs Committee recommends reallocating $75,000 Royal Caribbean donation to senior programs and facility

The Civic Affairs Committee voted unanimously Jan. 21 to recommend that the Assembly adopt Resolution 26-04R, a replacement to a prior resolution that reallocates a $75,000 donation from Royal Caribbean Group so $30,000 is reserved for senior programming and $45,000 is set aside for a senior facility should one be identified.
Emily Deach, borough manager, provided background on prior allocations and spending: earlier versions of the allocation split the funds differently and the most recent arrangement had moved $60,000 toward outfitting a facility with $15,000 for programming. Deach said roughly $13,000 of the programming allocation has already been spent on senior activities and that the program appears "to be going really well." She said she would support increasing programming funds from these donated funds.
Assembly member Deb Potter and others described the senior activities supported by the donation — outings, meals and small events — as successful and urged that the municipality consider a longer-term budgetary approach once the grant funds are exhausted. Potter noted the program's popularity but said the Assembly may need to consider recurring funding during the next budget cycle.
After discussion the committee moved and seconded a recommendation that the Assembly approve Resolution 26-04R; the committee recorded a unanimous voice vote to forward the resolution for Assembly consideration.
The Assembly is scheduled to consider the resolution at its next meeting; if adopted, the reallocation would shift the distribution of the gift as described and leave the municipality positioned to identify facility needs should a suitable location be found.
