Public commenter urges port development as committee considers phased port inspections

A public commenter representing the Yukon Alaska Port Alliance urged the finance committee to keep waterfront and port development on its radar after item 6C was removed from the agenda on Feb. 18.
Dave Hunt said he had distributed background materials and referenced the Skagway Port development master plan (2008) and a past $10 million state planning grant; he asked the committee to follow up on waterfront concepts when staff can provide more information. Chair Potter said staff would track down the item and notify him when more information is available.
Later in the meeting, Deputy Manager Kameka, reading information from Port Director Jennings, described a fee proposal and a phased program of in‑water inspections to continue monitoring structural conditions at port facilities. Kameka said work completed in late 2025 included inspections of the fuel header section and wave barrier, and staff recommended continuing inspections to identify repairs and prevent further deterioration. Kameka said the program would establish a regular five‑year inspection cycle; the committee asked whether the inspections were budgeted and planned to address the item at the assembly meeting the next day.
No committee motion was taken on port development during the meeting; item 6C (waterfront development concepts) had been removed from the agenda earlier, and the inspection proposal will appear at the assembly meeting for further consideration.
