Proposed Klondike Highway dog park fails after public, committee concerns

One public commenter, Mister Camada, told the assembly he was concerned the proposed site sits adjacent to industrial uses and smells and questioned whether the park fit the comprehensive plan. "I was always under the impression that the plan was to utilize that land for public works," the commenter said, and suggested using Shoreline Park or limited hours instead of a 24/7 fenced park.
Sponsor Assemblymember Waddell said she had introduced the resolution to ignite discussion and was pleased that it had done so, but said she no longer believed the site under consideration was right and did not press the resolution to move forward in its current form. Assemblymember Hillis reported that Public Works had reviewed the proposal and voted not to approve it for forwarding.
Assemblymembers discussed alternatives, including land around the 7 Pastures ball fields and state-owned parcels; Morgan noted state property limitations but identified unused municipality-owned parcels behind the ball fields as potential options.
After discussion the clerk called roll; the vote on adoption recorded six no and the resolution failed.
Next steps: Civic Affairs has scheduled a field trip/work session to examine potential dog-park locations; the assembly did not adopt the resolution or commit funds at this meeting.
