Assembly approves amendment to busking rules to allow limited amplification

The Skagway Assembly on Aug. 21 adopted Ordinance 25-08, amending Skagway Municipal Code section 5.20.050 to update the municipal busking program and allow a limited amount of amplification.
City staff and civic affairs members said this is the third year of the busking program and feedback indicated that wind, train noise and ambient conditions made unamplified performance difficult to hear. The ordinance change is aimed at allowing some amplification so performers can be heard while operating under permit conditions.
Assembly members recalled earlier civic-affairs work on the program and the assembly voted by roll call to approve the ordinance. Members thanked a former mayor for championing the program and described the amendment as an example of trying a program, gathering feedback and making adjustments.
What happens next: the ordinance becomes part of the municipal code and staff will implement the updated permit rules for the next busking season.
