Skagway Assembly adopts modest pay change for elected officials to take effect in 2028

The Municipality of Skagway Assembly voted to adopt Ordinance 25-11, adjusting compensation for elected officials and scheduling the change to take effect in January 2028, at the end of current terms.
Vice Mayor Potter, who proposed an amendment to align Skagway’s pay with Haines rather than the larger $1,000-a-month increase initially suggested by another member, said the change was intended to avoid the appearance of granting an immediate raise to sitting elected officials. Potter said the measure also includes an automatic $10 annual increase beginning in 2029 so future members will not have to propose pay adjustments.
Assemblymember Hillis said she would support the measure even though she questioned why the increase was not enacted sooner. Assemblymember Henry reiterated that many on the assembly do not serve for pay and expressed reservations, saying he would vote no.
After discussion the assembly adopted the ordinance. The roll call showed the motion passed with four votes in favor and recorded opposition on the record.
