The Skagway Assembly approved on Dec. 4 the purchase of a used aerial ladder/tower apparatus for the fire department, citing improved rescue and suppression capability in dense historic areas and for cruise‑ship incidents.
Assembly member Potter noted the item was discussed in finance and that the apparatus is offered by Salem Fire Department for about $60,000 and would be bought from FY25 budgeted funds. Chief Jeff Rauscher told the table the apparatus is in very good condition, has passed destruction tests to date, and the department will conduct additional maintenance tests (hydraulics and lift tests) before finalizing the purchase. "This apparatus is part of a normal replacement cycle," Rauscher said, and its 102‑foot reach will allow rescues and operations the department cannot currently perform.
Members asked practical questions about parking the unit and how it would change firefighting and rescue capability; the chief said the department has space at the firehouse to house the apparatus and that it would increase the department’s reach and could improve ISO ratings. The motion passed on roll call (5‑yes).
What happens next: The fire department will complete maintenance and safety tests before completing purchase and will prepare training and storage plans.
