Skagway Assembly approves amended PIDP matching-funds resolution after dock redesign added $2 million

The Skagway Assembly on Sept. 4 adopted Resolution 25-20R, committing matching funds for a Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP) project after approving an amendment that relocates Dolphin 11 to align with the dock.
Assemblymember Hanson, who moved the amendment, explained that aligning Dolphin 11 with the rest of the dock would add versatility and strength to operations and better accommodate vessel approaches. He said the change increases the project cost by roughly $2 million and requires Skagway to provide approximately $500,000 in additional matching funds tied to the engineer’s estimate.
Public comment earlier in the meeting included a statement from Tim Cochran of Petrol Marine Services, who urged the assembly to consider a comprehensive, multiuse operational dock on the northern portion of the ore dock to support fuel, freight and cruise operations; Cochran said, “We definitely need fuel. It's essential.”
The amendment and the resolution passed unanimously by roll call (6 yes). Manager Deetsch had no additional comment beyond committee recommendations.
What happens next: With the amended alignment approved, staff and ports & harbors will advance the PIDP grant application materials and coordinate engineering details and match commitments.
