Cape Coral Youth Council schedules special mental-health panel, readies presentations to schools

The Cape Coral Youth Council voted March 6 to hold a special mental-health panel meeting in April to hear from local providers and school officials and to give members an opportunity to ask about services and resources available to adolescents.
Councilwoman Lastra, who proposed assembling a panel, told the council she had “an individual from Lee Health…a colleague from the Collaboratory,” and was working to identify a school-district representative to join the discussion. The council debated two tentative dates and approved a special meeting to be scheduled for either April 7 or April 24 with a 4 p.m. start time.
Member Johnson, who is the senior-project point person on the mental-health survey, said the group had received 214 responses from Oasis High School and is scheduled to present the council’s findings to the charter-school board on April 14. “We received 214 responses from Oasis High School,” Johnson said, and asked for volunteers to attend and read slides at that meeting.
Members also discussed parallel outreach to Lee County Schools. Advisor Hayden read an email from a district contact suggesting the two student questionnaires be combined; members agreed the council should confirm exactly which of the Youth Council’s questions the district will use before the council’s results are integrated. Council members expressed a desire to preserve the council’s original questions for comparability but said they would seek clarity from the district point person.
The council opened the special meeting motion after discussing timing, public access and whether the panel should be in a town-hall format; the motion passed by voice vote. Leaders said the panel could be a special meeting in council chambers and, if opened to the public, would allow peers and other community members to ask questions as well.
Next steps: finalize speakers for the panel (Lee Health, Collaboratory and a school-district representative), confirm the meeting date with staff, and pin down which Youth Council survey questions the county would adopt or combine with its instrument.
