Friends donate to fund signage on Bruce Freeman Rail Trail; small directory and pole signs planned

Summary
TAC heard that Friends of the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail contributed more than $10,000 to fill a funding gap for new trail signage after Community Preservation Act funds fell short; staff outlined plans for small directory signs and pole/arrow signs, with bids expected in May and installation this summer.
Staff updated TAC on plans for new signage along the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail after the Community Preservation Act funds originally set aside proved insufficient. The Friends of the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail provided a donation of more than $10,000 that closes the immediate funding gap and allows the signage effort to proceed.
Economic development staff described a proposed mix of three small directory signs (suggested locations: Giroux, Nashoba Brook and either Old Rifle Range or Powder Mill Road) and several pole/arrow wayfinding signs to help orient users and highlight nearby amenities such as West Concord Village, Davis Field and Nara Park. The directory signs are intended to be easily updated (every one to two years) so local business listings remain current. Staff said the project will go out to bid in May with installation targeted for this summer.
TAC members suggested including QR codes or small identifying numbers on signs to help people call emergency services with a referenced location, and asked staff to ensure pole height and placement meet multimodal safety guidelines so they do not obstruct cyclists. Staff confirmed those details will be addressed during design and field review.
Next steps: Staff will finalize sign locations, coordinate with Friends and Public Works on designs and post bid documents in May.
