The Bonita Springs City Council on second reading adopted an ordinance that transfers the decision-making authority for historic preservation into an expanded Planning and Zoning Board.
City counsel told council members the change does not eliminate the Historic Preservation Board but transfers its powers to the Planning and Zoning Board and that a resolution would be brought later to end the current historic-preservation board members' terms. Counsel said the consolidation is intended to create a single board that reviews projects comprehensively from initial planning through site plan implementation, which should shorten project time frames while adding consistent scrutiny.
The ordinance package includes a business-impact statement filed with the clerk as required by state law. Counsel said certifying the city for local historic-preservation programs may require statutorily defined positions; staff and the clerk will work on filling any necessary roles and adding consultant expertise where appropriate.
No public comment was offered on the item. A motion to approve the ordinance was made, seconded and carried on a roll-call vote.
