Historic district commission approves multiple sign, paint and roof requests; more information ordered on proposed wall sign

The Natchitoches Historic District Commission approved multiple routine applications at its meeting, including sign, paint and roof requests, while deferring a larger question about painted wall signage.
The chair opened the meeting, confirmed a quorum and asked for approval of the February minutes; commissioners approved the minutes and noted a new minutes format that will list commissioners present and who moved and seconded motions.
Applications approved at the meeting included:
- A front sign for Mended Mental Health; Laurie Jacobs, speaking for the applicant, confirmed the request covered only the sign and commissioners voted to approve the submitted design and color.
- A color-change application for O1 Ventures (Frank Griffin) for slate/blue-gray trim and door accents; the commission confirmed brick would not be painted and approved the trim color.
- A slate roof replacement for Bulldog Management at 300 Williams Avenue; Sarah Prudemov of Century 21 said the replacement uses colonial slate and will match the building’s historic appearance.
- In-kind repainting at 443 2nd Street (Will Adams); commissioners approved repainting the front door and shutters in their existing colors.
- Replacement of the former Cane River Candy Company sign with a same-size sign for a new health-and-wellness retail business proposed by Julie Houle; commissioners confirmed the design and size met requirements and approved the application.
During the meeting, the commission received a notice that Saint Denis Condominium is continuing previously approved balcony-support work; that item was treated as informational because the work had already been permitted.
One application drew extended discussion: at 550 Front Street, owner David Green proposed painting a large, historically styled wall sign matching archival photos. Commissioners asked for more information about how permitting such painted wall signs would affect downtown and whether existing signage square-footage limits would allow the proposed size. The commission voted to table that application for one month to permit a downtown site visit and staff calculations of allowable signage.
The commission set its next meeting for Monday, April 6 and adjourned.
