Mount Clemens commission approves routine items; resident urges districting and LGBTQ inclusion

The Mount Clemens City Commission approved routine items on the agenda, including minutes, payments of invoices and the consent agenda; staff noted item 10a (a Macomb County Bridal Committee event) had been withdrawn because of the pandemic and will be rescheduled.
During public comment resident Mike Zubas described a seven-point plan for the city: he asked the commission to consider district-based representation and ranked-choice voting, suggested coordinating with Clinton Township to repair Avery Road, urged stronger recycling efforts and a Parks and Recreation commission, and proposed pursuing an indoor year-round farmers market to repurpose the old Macomb Veil building. Zubas also urged commissioners to reconsider the withdrawn item 10a next year and said Mount Clemens has the potential to better serve its LGBTQ residents.
City Manager Johnson reported there had been no public comment at the prior meeting. In his manager’s report he also detailed small-business outreach led by the DDA, announced a city commission vacancy (partial term expiring in November 2021) with filing deadlines and signature requirements, outlined census outreach including two free boxed-lunch events, and described how city services are operating with staff working remotely and Dial-A-Ride operating by appointment with social-distancing measures. Commissioners closed the meeting after brief comments encouraging census participation and thanking local businesses and staff.
