The Mount Clemens City Commission voted on May 18 to waive outdoor patio permit fees for the 2020 season as a targeted measure to aid local restaurants.
A motion to waive the fees was presented by a commissioner and supported by staff. Staff noted the permit typically applies to businesses placing seating on public sidewalks, and that in recent years only a small number of restaurants used the permit (the staff estimate named three local businesses and a fee of about $1,000 per permit in prior seasons).
Supporters framed the waiver as a way to help businesses recover without direct cash transfers. "We're really just trying to help out our local business community," a staff representative said. The motion passed by roll call.
What happens next: city staff will implement the waiver for the 2020 season and notify affected businesses and the public about the application process and requirements.
