Board approves posting of 23 correction specialist positions to staff new behavioral health unit

The Shawnee County Board of County Commissioners approved a request from the Department of Corrections on March 5 to post and fill 23 correction specialist positions to staff an upcoming behavioral health unit.
Department Director Brian Cole said the request starts the formal posting and recruitment process as the department prepares for the unit's opening several months ahead. He noted the positions are budgeted and that each position's estimated salary and benefits total $85,285.45, to be paid from the FY2026 detention budget. Cole said staff will work with Human Resources and that employees selected for the unit will receive three specialized trainings.
Commissioner Aaron Mays moved approval, Commissioner Kevin Cook seconded, and the motion carried 2 to 0.
