Staff presented results from the RFP process to replace four aging "Welcome to Shelbyville" signs. The city budgeted $80,000 from the hotel/motel fund for the signs. Staff summarized the top five proposals (out of 11 submissions), giving dimensions, materials and per‑sign prices and showing total costs for four‑sign purchases and, in one case, a six‑sign offer with bulk pricing.
Designs ranged from faux sandstone or stacked‑stone monument styles to embossed sign panels and stucco finishes. Per‑sign prices in the top five ranged from about $12,964 to $25,140, with four‑sign totals and an optional six‑sign pricing explained for the leading vendor. Staff noted all quotes include installation, steel posts, concrete footers and breakaway hardware and recommended council review material durability and maintenance expectations before voting.
Council members asked staff to verify specific details with vendors — including what "embossed sign panel" means in practice, longevity of materials and whether lettering is applied or integral — and asked public works to weigh in on expected maintenance cycles. Staff noted some vendors have installed similar signs in other towns for 20+ years. Council will take a final vote at the next city council meeting after staff returns with vendor clarifications and durability estimates.
