The Minneapolis City Council opened its March 5 meeting with two ceremonial resolutions.
Council members presented a resolution marking Women’s History Month and highlighting increased representation on local councils; the text noted Minneapolis had a majority of women on its city council (7 of 13, five women of color). Karen Mosheher, director of Neighborhood and Community Relations and executive sponsor for the city’s women employee network, thanked employees and described the network’s role in supporting and elevating women across city departments.
The council then read a resolution recognizing the holy month of Ramadan. The resolution described Ramadan as a time of fasting, reflection and community; it noted Minneapolis’s sizeable Somali and East African Muslim communities and referenced recent increases in xenophobia following "Operation Metro Surge." President Payne invited community leaders to speak. Jelani Hussain, executive director of the Council on American‑Islamic Relations in Minnesota, thanked the council and said Ramadan is a moment to "reconnect with our creator and most importantly, refocus on things that matter — taking care of our neighbors and our community." Malaika Dahir of RISE Minnesota described fear among Somali American families and urged continued council support for Muslim communities facing targeted enforcement.
Both resolutions were adopted without further change and the council posed for a group photo following the presentations.
