Thoreau fifth-graders present kindness project and represent Concord on TV

The committee recognized Thoreau Elementary’s fifth-grade student council and heard several students describe their leadership roles and a kindness project that produced nearly 400 Valentine’s cards for Concord’s senior centers. Sylvie Schonbrunn said she joined student council to be a voice for peers; Hazel spoke about representing students with Down syndrome and encouraging inclusion; Pietro Bucci outlined student council responsibilities and the process (class speeches and a fifth-grade vote) for selecting representatives; Owen Carson described organizing Valentine supply bags and delivering cards to senior citizens; and other students recounted conversations at a seniors jazz brunch where more than 100 seniors attended.
The principal introduced the students and praised their service; several committee members thanked the students and encouraged future student council participation. The committee noted local TV coverage and applauded the students for representing Concord positively.
