Council authorizes masonry and materials for Big Woods Campground restroom, aims for majority completion by August

Councilors on March 2 authorized masonry work and materials purchases for the Big Woods Campground restroom and site improvements and heard a staff update on schedule and funding.
Brian Heath, who presented construction progress, said the restroom’s foundation and rough plumbing are in place and that primary electric service has been run to the site. Heath described a project budget of $300,000 that he characterized as coming from a $150,000 DNR grant, a $50,000 donation and $50,000 contributions from both the county and the city. He said Ackerson Masonry indicated it could start work when the weather breaks and anticipated masonry completion by April, which would allow subsequent interior and site construction to proceed.
Heath said the campground expansion will add about 23 sites; staff expect the 22 sites referenced in the plan to have individual water and electric service. He cautioned that whether people can camp there this season will depend in part on how quickly turf and landscaping establish after construction: "We're hoping to have the majority of this accomplished by August at the latest," he said.
Council approved the contract with Ackerson Masonry and separately approved purchase of building materials, with the clerk noting a corrected amount for one line item ($28,827.64). Staff listed follow-up tasks including scheduling masonry when weather allows and procuring materials per the approved budget.
